Abram – what is in a name

Every name in hebrew has a deeper meaning, a significance.  Abram is defined as “father of many sons.”  I have been reading a nifty overview of the bible and they pointed this out, with a curiousity – by age 75 he was still childless.  What an odd name for someone who up until this point has not had children.

Yet God told Abram that he would “make [his] descendents as the dust of the earth; so that if anyone can number the dust of the earth, then your descendents can also be numbered.” (13:16) And by Abram’s faithful obedience to God’s every instruction, we can presume that he trusted God in the matter — at least most of the time.   – minibiblecollege booklet 1, pg 16

So Abram took his name by faith, knowing that God’s plan and his good hand would lead him in the right direction.  What was not visible and apparent in his life would change in God’s Time.

Application question – Am I willing to continue in this life without seeing fruit?  Fruit can mean success in family, career, health, or fill in the blank.  Where are you? are you willing to live this life holding just a promise but nothing tangible to say it will happen?  All comments welcome.
